How to compare exact product variants without mixing them up

Model families hide meaningful differences. Build the comparison around identifiers and verified specifications, not titles or photographs alone.

01

Create a variant identity

Record the manufacturer model code and, when available, a valid GTIN, SKU scope, capacity, size, colour, connectivity, condition, region, and included accessories. Retailer SKUs are normally seller-specific and should not be treated as global identifiers.

A photograph is supporting context, not proof of the exact variant. Titles may omit qualifiers or reuse a family name across different generations.

02

Compare only compatible specifications

Use category-specific fields and their original units. Normalize values for filtering only when the conversion is transparent, and retain the source value so a shopper can see what changed.

Missing values should stay missing. Conflicting values require review rather than a silent majority vote or a convenient assumption.

03

Keep price and availability attached to the offer

A product specification describes a variant; price and stock describe a particular market offer. Do not transfer stock, delivery, warranty, or seller information from one offer to another.

Country selection must filter market eligibility before ranking. Currency display alone does not prove local inventory or shipping eligibility.

04

Use history after identity is stable

Combine price observations only after the exact variant and offer scope are resolved. A cheaper capacity, refurbished condition, marketplace seller, or overseas model can distort the history of the item a shopper actually wants.

05

Make differences visible

A useful comparison highlights material differences, evidence times, unavailable fields, and decision consequences. It should help the shopper choose a suitable variant, not merely declare a winner.
